Building a house is the single biggest investment I will ever make. And the only reason I felt comfortable making that investment was because of Focal Point. In 2019 we bought a 1958 house in McLean, and lived in it 18 months before it started falling apart: sewer backed up, roof leaked, and HVAC started dying. We started talking to builders, comparing prices, and having extensive conversations with a few companies. Initially, Focal Point seemed too expensive, so we pursued other options. Then a funny thing happened. As we had more conversations with other builders, we started adding up what the total build price would be, after all prep work and options, and suddenly Focal Point wasn’t expensive anymore. In fact, they started to look like the best deal. Focal Point knew the level of finish expected in McLean, and it was already included in their price. On top of that, we started to develop opinions of some of the other builders working in the area, and they weren’t always positive. Some of these builders wouldn’t return calls. Some seemed way too focused on the sale. And for some builders, I just didn’t feel like I could trust them. By contrast, Focal Point was a paragon of trustworthiness. I felt like I was working with friends. Even before we signed the contract, Adam, the sales manager, spent hours and hours with me, going over price lists and options and meeting me at current builds so I could pick the right model and get a feel for this enormous investment. And once we signed the contract with Focal Point, they went into high gear helping us understand everything, keeping us on track, and delivering outstanding service. We had telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for everyone, from design to finance to project management, and each person took the time to help us understand and feel comfortable with the entire home building process. They were also amazingly attentive to detail. Early in the process, the purchasing manager called us and said, “Let’s talk about windows.” We built during COVID, and there were supply chain issues all over the construction industry. But by talking to us early, there was zero delay getting our windows, and keeping the entire build on track. Another time they went above and beyond was fitting my house to my lot, which slopes up towards the back. The model of home I had selected didn’t naturally fit, because of the back yard rise, but I had a vague idea of a garage at basement level, with stairs up to the main floor. I didn’t have the vision to figure out the details, but Scott Murray, the founder of Focal Point, heard what I wanted, and came back with a beautiful design with additional stone, basement windows to let in more light, and an additional room of nearly 400 square feet at the top of the garage. This new design is my favorite feature, adds terrifically to the value of the house, and it was all because the founder of Focal Point took the time to make sure my family got what we needed. Travis, our project manager, deserves special attention, because he was amazingly communicative, informing us about major milestones, and getting our input to keep everything on track. He surpassed all expectations when he managed Telsa putting solar roof tiles on our home. Travis deftly coordinated service and delivery between the regular roofers, the electricians, Tesla, and us, even while some were not ideal communicators. Travis continues to be a godsend, even two years after we’ve taken delivery of the house, recommending tradespeople, and answering unending questions about our house. People warned us before we started, that something would go wrong. But honestly, building a house with Focal Point was a real joy. They were exactly on budget, delivered our home two weeks earlier than they originally said it would be ready (in time for Christmas!), and made me and my family feel so incredibly comfortable making this enormous investment in our future. In the end, I genuinely believe that we got our perfect house, at a fair price, thanks to Focal Point.

Another person built my Focal Points home, but I was the first to live there in 2018. Every single person remarks on the beauty of the home. I've found the home to be well built and functional. I plan to live there for another 20 years. What's really impressive is what's happened since. Last year I had a minor issue I needed looking at (external vent). I reached out to Focal Points to get a recommendation on a repair person. They sent their own people over right away and fixed it gratis. Seven years after the home was built. I can't guarantee that will happen with every issue you may have with your Focal Point home, but I was very impressed with their level of ongoing service.

We have worked with Focal Point Homes on two different occasions. They’ve done an amazing job on our each of our homes, and every time, we’ve been blown away by the results. The homes are gorgeous and exactly what we've hoped for. What really stands out, though, is their top-notch customer service and responsiveness. Whenever we’ve had an issue or needed something, their team has been extremely quick to respond and sort things out, making sure everything gets resolved fast. Their friendly and efficient service makes the whole process very easy. We couldn’t be happier with their work and the way they take care of their clients. Focal Point is such a great custom builder. I had clients who choose to move forward with them after interviewing a handful of builders. Focal Points staff and customer service is top notch. Their high quality work coupled with great design support makes for a great experience when building a home. Their PM was Matt Wagner and he is by far one of the best in the industry when it comes to making sure that the client is heard and their expectations are met. I work with a lot of builders and Focal Point is one of the best in the Northern VA area. If you are looking to buy a Spec home or do a custom built home, you should reach out to them.

Focal Point Homes has not only lived up to its stellar reputation; they have exceeded our expectations. The process started with Adam White, a FPH sales rep who was patient, knowledgeable and demonstrated great integrity throughout the entire process. We first looked into already constructed homes with Adam, but then decided on one that was just about to begin construction. It was a pleasure working with Adam, from our first questions about the process through the end of the build. Once we went under contract, we started working with our project manager, Mike Perez, who continually went above and beyond to ensure every detail was covered, projects were completed to spec, and timelines were met or exceeded. He consistently answered our questions and remained highly available and very responsive. Even at the tail end of the pandemic, when supply chains were strained, Focal Point wisely looked around corners, planning far ahead and ensuring our supplies arrived on time. The home was actually finished a month earlier than expected! In addition to that, the work is very high quality. Our inspection found nothing substantial and after living in the home for over a year, we have found things to be very well constructed and have seen no major issues. A real testimony to the quality of this company is how they have remained engaged even after we moved in. Our project manager Mike Perez has continued to support us, answer questions, and schedule any follow-up appointments long after closing. During our punch-list walk-through, as opposed to doing the minimum, Mike will notice things himself and mark them to be fixed. Mike has demonstrated the utmost professionalism and customer care to this day, well over a year since we moved in. Put simply, Mike and FPH stand by their product, and that has given us a great sense of peace about such a large project and purchase. I could say similar things about the design team, legal and contractual folks, or the owner himself: we could not be happier with the whole Focal Point team! At one point I asked the design team for some advice about the size of a TV I wanted to mount in a tricky location (not part of their job) and they were happy to make a recommendation, which has worked out perfectly. Even the owner has walked our home and overseen the details. FPH truly works as a team, from sales to design to project management and beyond. If you’re looking for a builder, look no further. My wife and I have extremely high standards and have only been impressed with Focal Point Homes, who helped make our dream home a reality.

Focal Point was amazing to work with and we absolutely love our new home. We first met with FPH several years ago when we thought we were ready to build, as it turned out we wound up moving out of the area for several years, but we kept in touch with the FPH team and were very impressed with their professionalism, patience, and absolutely zero stress zero pressure approach. When we knew we were moving back to the area we worked with them as we shopped for tear down properties. They made it very easy to determine which lots would work for what we wanted to do and which would not. Then we did the design and build almost entirely remotely from out of town with virtual meetings with their designers and project managers. I don't think we could have done this remotely with any other builder. FPH made it very easy, and helped us as we made changes and adjustments to some of our choices throughout the build. Can't recommend them strongly enough. PS- We worked with multiple project managers at FPH over the course of our build and they were all fantastic, but we worked primarily with Nick and we have to give him a special shout out because he was amazing, particularly considering we did it almost all from out of town.
